THE DOLPHVAN 🐬🚐

In May 2018 I purchased a 2000 Dodge Ram B1500 Contracting Van and converted it into my home.

Follow my journey here as I navigate living off-grid in the most famous grid of all time: New York City.

The project is a life-art exploration into creative survival. In theater we create worlds of great imagination that help us simulate a different way of organizing our societies and world. A quick scroll through #vanlife on Instagram will have you think this way of life is contingent on a trust-fund, remote employment, mostly white maleness, and a proclivity to extreme sports.

I’m here to say that simply isn’t true. It’s an illusion. Rather, its an over-saturation in available imagery.

At least its not my experience. And experience is the best teacher. Which is why I started this project - in the words of Taylor Mac: “Let the call to action be the action itself.”

There is another way. And here’s my world as proof.

Tiny Dyke; Van Life - Episode 1: RUST

Jackie Rivera April 14, 2021

Tiny Dyke; Van Life is a semi-autobiographical account of converting, and living/surviving in a van. A comedic exploration of creative survival and queer companionship through object manipulation and material competency. Everyone’s favorite (?) queer fix-it clown, Tiny Dyke, and their domestic puppet pals are at it again struggling to maintain their beloved alternative home, The DolphVAN.

Synopsis: This week TD discovers that rust has begun to spread (gasp!) causing leaks that won’t let up! (ahhh!) Tiny Dyke gets down and dirty to share DIY expertise and existential woes on their quest to overcome the water-based foe, face The DolphVAN’s mortality and discover the true nature of their connection with the world’s most eligible aquatic mammal.

Originally aired on April 10th + 11th for Pratt's Performance and Performance Studies 2021 Thesis presentation - Written by, crafted by, and starring Jackie Rivera.
